Steelhenge is a monumental environmental installation that gradually develops into a new sacred temple for public space, parks and festivals. It is an impressive arrangement of twelve heavy industrial astrological stands that together create an inclusive and open mythological space.
On each Astrostand or totem, archetypes of the twelve constellations are designed in iron imagery. This ever-growing universal symbolism from various ancient civilizations surrounds the audience like multi-colored hieroglyphs and connects with participants on different levels. A wildfire travels periodically through the installation, just as our sun makes his annual cycle through our zodiac.
Steelhenge invites people individually and collectively to connect and reflect through symbolism. A visit to the artwork makes the invisible visible and connects the universe in cyclical patterns to our live on earth.
Like its megalithic predecessor Stonehenge, Steelhenge is positioned on location as a sun clock to mark the course of our seasons. Special cyclical moments such as equinoxes are some of the natural annual celebrations that are made visible. In prehistoric times, Stonehenge also served as a peace monument to unite tribes with a collective effort and bringing people (and stones) together. Steelhenge is a contemporary traveling version of this ancient monument. It has the same intention and connecting quality. In addition to visual art, modern technology will also be used to further develop this new temple of the stars. The starting point remains one of human encounter.
